Discover our various previous works in Ghana, Philippines, Madagascar and Mozambique, from 2010 to 2024.
01
GHANA, 2010
The GAIN Foundation supported the establishment of the Nyanyano and Elmina Salt Cooperative with the technical input of external consultants, three of whom are now members of FortiCoop.
The main goal was to ensure that small producers, organized in a cooperative open to all salt producers, could adequately iodize their salt before selling it. Members, board members and staff were trained, specific business model was designed and the cooperatives were formally registered.

02
Philippines, 2011
The GAIN Foundation assisted in creating the Tamaraw Salt Producers Cooperative in Occidental Mindoro, with three FortiCoop members serving as consultants at the time. The project focused on helping members organize and register their cooperative, as well as building their capacity to collectively produce and distribute adequately fortified salt with iodine. Occidental Mindoro, a major salt-producing province with about 3,500 salt farmers, benefited significantly from this initiative.
03
Madagascar, 2017
As part of UNICEF's Universal Salt Iodization (USI) program, it became evident that small salt farmers were not participating in the USI project. Consequently, the concept of a salt cooperative was established in Morondava on the West Coast. In 2018, training sessions on proper iodized salt production were conducted, and quality control manuals were provided to the government and the salt cooperative. The main challenge was to bring competing salt producers together to share iodization equipment and resources.

04
Mozambique, 2024
In March 2024, we conducted a feasibility study for two salt cooperatives established in 2019: Coopisal in Nova Mambone and Copisama in Machanga. Adhering to USDA study guide principles, the analysis focused on key criteria essential for evaluating the feasibility and viability of the cooperatives. The study included a market analysis looking into demand, supply, and forecasting dynamics. it also investigated technical and operational feasibility, a financial and economic analysis and a legal, regulatory, and governance frameworks review evaluating the organizational structure and capabilities necessary for successful project implementation.
This comprehensive, integrated approach provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by the cooperatives, guiding decision-making and project planning.
